HARTFORD, CT -- Hartford is home to an estimated 6,000 youth ages 16 to 24 who are neither in school nor working, often referred to as “Opportunity Youth.” One of the most significant needs these young people have is obtaining soft job skills, training, credentials, and real world work experience that employers demand. Some of these young people will receive the training and opportunities they need thanks to a two-year, $250,000 grant from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving to Billings Forge Community Works, in collaboration with Our Piece of the Pie®, Inc. (OPP®), that will  support an Opportunity Youth Job Training Program.

HARTFORD, CT -- In a time of uncertainty, leaders in Hartford public schools, nonprofit agencies and the philanthropic sector say they are committed to the city’s “community school” strategy that has been cited as a national model. On Wednesday, members of the Hartford Partnership for Student Success, a coalition that includes public and private partners, signed another yearlong agreement to continue the decade-old “wraparound” help that has turned a half-dozen city schools into neighborhood hubs with health services, after-school programs, clothing banks and holiday dinners. The Hartford Partnership for Student Success is supported by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, Hartford Public Schools, the Office for Youth Services, and the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut.

Hartford Foundation Partners With Local and National Community Foundations to Address Youth Opportunity Gap

HARTFORD, CT -- Last month, Hartford Foundation president Jay Williams and Elysa Gordon, the Foundation’s senior advisor, joined with other members of CFON in Chicago to outline the group’s progress over the past year and chart a course for the future. In 2016, the Hartford Foundation became a charter member of the Community Foundation Opportunity Network (CFON), a collaboration among 40 community foundations to narrow that “opportunity gap” so that all children in America have the chance to achieve their full potential.
