Cigna Supports Pipeline of Urban Superintendents with $250,000 Grant to School of Education

WASHINGTON, DC, and BLOOMFIELD, CT -- Howard University School of Education has tackled systemic inequality in education by creating a pipeline of superintendents of color, specifically trained to lead in urban school districts for the past five years.  Today, the AASA-Howard University Urban Superintendents Academy announced it received a $250,000 grant from Cigna Corporation, a global health service company, to expand the innovative program.

Hamden Student Creates Scholarship Fund for Classmates at The Community Foundation Thanks to AT&T Grant

BRANFORD, CT -- Bees and other natural pollinators are incredibly efficient little critters, but they could always use a little help fulfilling their unique role in the world’s ecosystem — and the Branford Fire Department, working with Sustainable CT, is happy to do what it can to help. Project organizers are asking the community to join the initiative by donating money or volunteering in the effort. All community donations will be doubled by Sustainable CT’s Community Match Fund, funded by the Smart Seed Fund, Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, and the Connecticut Green Bank, provides a dollar-for-dollar match to donations raised from the community, doubling local investment in projects.

Norwalk Public Schools Launches Educational Equity Study

Starting immediately, the district will partner with Temple University's Dr. Edward Fergus on an eight-month project that will include implicit bias and diversity training. The Collective Impact Opportunity Fund at Fairfield County's Community Foundation has committed to funding the Norwalk Educational Equity Initiative. This invitation-only Fund makes grants to public agencies and non-profit organizations striving to close educational, workforce and other opportunity gaps among children, youth and families in Connecticut.

Nellie Mae Education Foundation Announces Their Supporting Organizations Led By People of Color and Amplifying Youth Voice Grant Recipients

QUINCY, MA -- Nellie Mae Education Foundation announced their first grant awards under their new organizational strategy to advance racial equity in public education. The Supporting Organizations Led By People of Color grants will provide $100,000 annually for three years to organizations led by leaders of color who are working to transform barriers to racial equity in public education. The Amplifying Youth Voice grants seek to amplify the authentic voices of young people throughout New England, supporting their participation in decision-making that affects their futures. This grant fund will support youth organizing groups with three-year general operating support grants of $52,750 annually, as well as technical assistance focused on building their capacity, power, and voice.

CHEFA whiffs on $63M in tax credits for CT nonprofit developments

HARTFORD, CT -- Aquasi-public state agency that hoped to draw $63 million in federal tax credits to finance nonprofit development projects in low-income and distressed areas has struck out on its first attempt. The Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority (CHEFA) was not on a list --  released by the U.S. Treasury last week -- of successful applicants for the so-called New Market Tax Credit program, created in 2003 to attract private investment for developments in poorer census tracts. CHEFA will try again when it submits an application later this year for the next round of credits, which will be awarded about a year from now.
