Milton Fisher Fund Awards More Than $135,000 in College Scholarships

NEW HAVEN, CT -- The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is pleased to announce the winners of the 2020 Milton Fisher Scholarship for Innovation and Creativity. Eleven high school students who came up with distinctive solutions to problems faced by their schools, communities, families and the world received a total of $136,000 in college scholarships (payable over four years of college.) In addition, seven high school students receiving honorable mentions were awarded a total of $3,500 in scholarships.

BethEl Center Receives Grant to Support Homeless Shelter Services

MILFORD, CT -- Beth-El Center homeless shelter and soup kitchen in Milford has been awarded a $90,000 multi-year grant from The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. NEW HAVEN, CT -- A new public-private partnership is offering low-interest and partially forgivable loans to local minority-owned and women-owned small businesses. The initial loan pool of $1.5 million will offer loans of up to $25,000 for small businesses located in New Haven and the lower Naugatuck Valley cities of Derby and Ansonia. The Partnership Loan Program for Minority- and Women-Owned Businesses in New Haven and the Lower Naugatuck Valley was created through a partnership among The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, HEDCO, Inc., the Amour Propre Fund and The City of New Haven.

The Great Give® is Greater New Haven’s 36-hour online giving event, created by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and conducted annually since 2010 to increase philanthropy in the Greater New Haven region of South Central Connecticut. Not only was the amount raised nearly double that of the prior year, but the number of total donors was up by 43 percent - a sign of the commitment and generosity of the region to rally for its continued well-being.

New Haven Census 2020 Party On Wheels To Roll Through Undercounted Neighborhoods On May 8th

NEW HAVEN, CT -- Depsite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Justin Elicker and members of the Greater New Haven 2020 Census Complete Count Committee, with support from the City of New Haven, have announced that on Friday, May 8, from 10 AM to 4 PM, a socially distanced, Party-On-Wheels will be rolling through the city’s undercounted neighborhoods. Residents will stay safely inside their homes to celebrate the festive caravan featuring live music. Those who complete the census are eligible to win prizes that include a tablet, Chromebook, or gift card. Residents that have already completed the census can get a second shot at the drawing by sharing a video or photo of their census celebration.

“The 2020 Census is about money, power, and the future of our community,” said Karolina Ksiazek, Complete Count Program Manager and a consultant for The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. “We’ve had to be creative to make sure every household takes part. We can’t let marginalized communities be counted out.”

$1.3 million distributed to Greater New Haven nonprofits helping vulnerable communities

NEW HAVEN, CT -- Approximately $2.6 million has been raised for nonprofits helping vulnerable communities amid the coronavirus pandemic, half of which already has been awarded. The Greater New Haven COVID-19 Community Fund recently distributed a second round of grants totaling $677,000 to 36 organizations after giving out almost $700,000 in the first ground. The fund launched in late March as a partnership between the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and United Way of Greater New Haven to raise money and get resources quickly to area nonprofits helping vulnerable communities affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
