Hunt Library Receives Grants to Enhance Distancing

FALLS VILLAGE, CT -- The David M. Hunt Library in Falls Village has received grants totaling $5,000 to enhance social distancing in the library, by expanding computer and internet accessibility on the library’s second floor, according to a statement. A grant for $1,750 was provided by the Northwest Community Foundation; $1,750 from the Covid-19 Response Fund and the Northwest Corner Fund of the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation; $1,500 was provided by Foundation for Community Health.

SHEFFIELD, MA -- The Berkshires are rich with art, dance, theater, and music, dotted with picturesque towns and rolling hills that bloom red and gold in the fall. Tourists and second-home owners have been flocking here in increasing numbers, but for many of the people who live and work here year-round, getting by is a greater struggle than it used to be. The number of people in poverty in Berkshire County rose by nearly a third between 2000 and 2015, even as the overall year-round population dipped and the number of seasonal home owners increased almost 19 percent, according to data compiled for a recent study by the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.

The report, “Beneath the Surface: The Opioid Epidemic in Northwest Connecticut” explores the crime rates related to opioid addiction in the area, insurance rates, treatment admission rates, how the crisis started, and what solutions can work specifically in a rural region. The Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation, the Foundation for Community Health, Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, and the McCall Center for Behavioral Health partnered to publish the report.
