Hello, CCP Members!
The year has begun, the state’s legislative session begins next week, and the CCP staff is busy preparing for the work ahead. We have a number of exciting programs and series in development, including: our network meetings (including a new network for development professionals); Race, Equity, and Philanthropy: A Workshop Series to Move from Learning to Practice (to be announced very soon); and our Annual Conference, scheduled on May 19 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. This year’s conference committee and I are excited to announce Keynote Speaker Trabian Shorters, CEO and founder of BMeCommunity, and former Vice President at the Knight Foundation. Understanding the important role of storytelling and narratives in the social sector, he originated a communications approach called Asset-Framing.
This issue of CCP's Member eBrief is chock full of information, opportunities, and resources, but before you read further, take a moment to look at highlights of what we accomplished together during our 50th anniversary year in CCP's 2019 Year in Review, and the impressive work of our CT Early Childhood Collaborative.

Connecticut Public Radio's "Where We Live" interviewed Phil Buchanan, president of Center for Effective Philanthropy and author of Giving Done Right: Effective Philanthropy and Making Every Dollar Count; CCP President Karla Fortunato; Gian-Carl Casa, president and CEO of the Connecticut Community Nonprofit Alliance; and Andrew Ferguson, chief education officer, Dalio Philanthropies, and senior advisor, the Partnership for Connecticut. The interview centered on the role philanthropy plays in helping Connecticut residents; how much of a role the state government should play in supporting Connecticut’s nonprofits; and the public-private partnership that aims to address educational disparities in Connecticut. Fairfield County's Community Foundation hosted the morning event and the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving was the afternoon host. Early Childhood Funder Collaborative News
EARLY CHILDHOOD RFP
The CT Early Childhood Funder Collaborative (CT ECFC), a project of CCP, is accepting proposals from existing local early childhood collaboratives such as STRIVE/Cradle to Career Coalitions, School Readiness Councils, and former Discovery Early Childhood Collaboratives. The grants are intended to strengthen organizational capacity and implement birth to age 5 system projects. This federally funded project is a collaboration in partnership with the CT Office of Early Childhood. Eligible applicants may apply for up to $30,000 for efforts to be completed by June 30, 2020. Deadline for submission is Friday, February 7, 2020. Learn more >>
2019 ANNUAL REPORT
In 2019, several of the CT Early Childhood Funder Collaborative's long-term action items became reality. Key accomplishments included: launching the CT Children's Collective to connect communities to one another and to the state; working with the OEC on an overhaul of Connecticut’s childcare financing system that will address equity and provider administrative burden; and partnering with OEC to bring Federal Preschool Development Grant dollars to local ECE collaboratives (see RFP above). PUERTO RICAN EARTHQUAKES
From the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) Weekly Update, "There have now been more than 1,300 earthquakes in Puerto Rico since December 28. Thousands of people are seeking safety in shelters or sleeping outside because of damage to their homes or fear of more aftershocks. The governor has authorized $2 million in assistance to support these towns. President Trump agreed last week to issue a major disaster declaration for the hardest hit counties." In response to questions on how to help, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving recently tweeted a thread on recommendations. They are ready to help residents of Greater Hartford who have been affected by this crisis with their Respond-Rebuild-Renew Fund.
The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain established a fund within the Greater New Britain Disaster Response Fund for gifts designated for Puerto Rico Earthquake Relief.
New Haven for Puerto Rico (#NH4PR), an effort organized by the New Haven Latino Council, is raising funds to provide various forms of support and relief for Puerto Rico. The #NH4PR is a collective of community organizations and leaders including The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven's Progeso Latino Fund.
The Fundación Comunitaria de Puerto Rico (Community Foundation of Puerto Rico) reactivated the Puerto Rico Community Recovery Fund to respond to the necessities of the communities in the southwest part of the island affected by the earthquakes.
Hispanics in Philanthropy is partnering with organizations that had critical roles in helping after Hurricane Maria. Their HIPGIVE Support Puerto Rico crowfunding will support eight community partners.
AUSTRALIAN BUSH FIRESFrom Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) Weekly Update: "As of January 14, thirty people have been killed since the summer season began at the beginning of October. At least 2,683 homes have been destroyed plus thousands of other structures. It is estimated that a billion animals have been killed, not counting frogs or invertebrates. Approximately 46,000,000 acres have been destroyed to date. Rainy weather has made conditions much better but it was not enough to fully extinguish the fires. CDP, in conjunction with Candid, is tracking philanthropic donations to the bushfires. To date, we are aware of $136.7 million USD in contributions." Australia’s summer of bushfires is an ecological, social, and economic catastrophe. These unprecedented fires in both their scale and intensity are clearly related to climate change, and its consequences include prolonged drought, hotter temperatures, and a much longer fire season.
DISASTER RESOURCES
The best resource for information on disaster relief is the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP), which helps donors maximize their impact in disaster-related giving decisions. Their most current report, Measuring the State of Disaster Philanthropy 2019: Data to Drive Decisions, found that in 2017, 64 percent of disaster philanthropy was directed toward short-term response and relief, with much smaller amounts going toward long-term reconstruction and recovery, resilience and preparedness, despite these areas being where sustained philanthropy can make the biggest difference. Did You Know that State Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Requirements Have Changed?
A new state law, "Time's UP Act" (PA 19-16 and PA 19-93), requires all employers with three or more employees, to provide two hours of sexual harassment prevention training to their employees by October 1, 2020, and training to new employees within six months of hire. Our 2020 keynote speaker is Trabian Shorters, CEO and founder of BMeCommunity, and former VP at the Knight Foundation. Welcome New Members!
The Nordson Corporation Foundation awards grants to non-profits in communities where they have major facilities throughout the United States. In Connecticut they focus on New London and Windham counties. Since 1989, the Foundation has awarded more than $60 million in grants to improve the quality of life in their communities, placing a special focus on causes related to education. During the last fiscal year, the Foundation gave out 362 grants totaling $6.3 million. The foundation's primary contacts are Cecilia Render, executive director, foundation and community affairs, and Lorie Mendoza, community relations manager.
Tufts Health Plan Foundation, located in Watertown, Massachusetts and founded in 2008, recently began grantmaking activities in Connecticut. Through their community investments, the Foundation has given more than $37.5 million to Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island nonprofits that improve healthy living with an emphasis on older people. The Foundation began funding in New Hampshire in 2016 and in Connecticut in 2019. The Foundation funds programs that move communities toward implementing age-friendly policies and practices that are relevant, focus on the most vulnerable, and include older people in the process. The Foundation's primary contacts are Nora Moreno Cargie, president, Phillip González, senior program officer, and Kimberley Blakemore, program officer for Connecticut.
A Closer Look at Generation Work Partnership
Launched by the Annie E. Casey Foundation in 2015, Generation Work™ aims to connect more of America’s young adults with meaningful employment by changing the way public and private systems prepare them for jobs. In Hartford, the Generation Work partnership is creating career pathways to help young adults ages 18–29 who are unemployed or not in school attain the skills and credentials needed to succeed in high-demand industries. A New Grantmaking Strategy
The Nellie Mae Education Foundation has announced the launch of their new grantmaking strategy, which will focus primarily on advancing racial equity in public education. As a philanthropic organization, they will use their privilege to advance conversations around racial equity and excellence in public education, support organizations who are doing this work, champion their goals, and amplify their voices. As part of this new strategy, Nellie Mae will support a cohort of 15 community-based organizations led by people of color who are working with communities of color to transform barriers to racial equity in public K-12 education. They will be hosting an RFP Informational Webinar on February 3 for those interested in learning more about the opportunity.
Health Disparities in Connecticut
Connecticut Health Foundation's new report, Health Disparities in Connecticut: Causes, Effects, and What We Can Do, highlights data on the significant gaps in health between white residents and people of color, as well as recommendations about steps Connecticut can take to close these gaps. Health disparities and the conditions that cause them are significant problems with deep roots, and they have steep costs to individuals, communities, and the economy. Other states and health systems have made progress in reducing or even eliminating disparities. Connecticut can learn from these examples to make the state one where everyone can be as healthy as possible, regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.

- Independent Sector, in partnership with the Stanford Social Innovation Review, has published Civil Society for the 21st Century, an eBook that features perspectives from 25 of America’s biggest thinkers on how civil society can and must evolve in the decades ahead.
COGNITIVE BIAS
- The Equitable Evaluation Initiative recently posted, Every Single Cognitive Bias in One Infographic. "Science has shown that we tend to make all sorts of mental mistakes, called cognitive biases, that can affect both our thinking and actions. These biases can lead to extrapolating information from the wrong sources, seeking to confirm existing beliefs, or failing to remember events the way they actually happened." - CECP's (Chief Executives for Corporate Purpose) Giving in Numbers is a benchmarking tool on corporate social investments. For the 2019 report, 250 multi-billion-dollar companies with aggregate revenues of $7.9 trillion participated.
EQUITY IN GRANTMAKING
- Glasspockets' (Candid) blog, Invitation Only: Closing the Door to Equity, is penned by Claire Peeps of the Durfee Foundation in Los Angelesa, CA. She writes about invitation-only versus an open invitation grant application process, and suggests options for opening the grantmaking process as a way towards equity.

Theresa Hopkins-Staten has been named as the new President of the Eversource Energy Foundation. In this role, Hopkins-Staten will oversee the energy company's social responsibility programs to ensure their continued alignment with the company's overall mission and philanthropic strategy. Hopkins-Staten, who currently serves as Director of Connecticut Regulatory Affairs, is taking the helm following the retirement of Rod Powell, who stepped down as President of Corporate Citizenship on Dec. 31 following a career with Eversource and its legacy companies that spanned nearly 40 years. "We're honored at Eversource to be nationally-recognized as a leading company for our social corporate responsibility and our commitment to the communities we serve," said Eversource Chairman, President and CEO Jim Judge. "Theresa has long been a champion of programs and services that advocate for our customers, and her experience will help guide the Foundation to continue making meaningful and impactful investments across our region." Connecticut Community Foundation welcomes a new team member and announces two promotions. Melissa Lopata has been named director of communications. Melissa brings over 20 years of marketing experience to the Foundation. As a marketing consultant, she supported various non-profit, small business and corporate clients. Previously, Melissa served as vice president of program marketing for Citigroup. In her new role, she will plan, develop and implement all marketing strategies, communications, and public relations activities for the Foundation. Ellen Carter has been promoted to vice president of program and strategy. Starting as a program officer in 2012, and moving up to director of community leadership two years later, Ellen coordinates the Foundation’s leadership activities including strategic planning, diversity and inclusion, and grassroots funding. Cynthia Merrick has been promoted to director of development. Since 2007, Cindy has worked closely with donors and nonprofit organizations across the region that have established funds at the Foundation. As director of development, Cindy will lead her team to create and implement a strategy to help donors pursue their charitable visions and to maximize the impact of philanthropy in our community.
The Tow Foundation is pleased to announce that Victoria Vilaysane has joined its team as executive assistant to the president and chairman. Prior to joining the foundation, Victoria served as a dedicated assistant for over 12 years, focusing on C-suite administrative and financial support. Victoria is responsible for providing the Foundation’s president, chairman, and Board of Trustees with administrative, project management, and logistical support. Read more >>

The United Way of Connecticut Board of Directors has announced Richard Porth's plans to step down as CEO. The Board has asked Rick to remain on the job through June to assure a smooth transition while a comprehensive search is conducted to replace him. Since 2008, Rick has worked closely with UWC's Board and staff leaders and the many great partners in state government, local United Ways, as well as community and business leaders to help provide information and access to health and human services and community services that enable people all across Connecticut to make a better life.
