Philanthropy's Responses to the Orlando Tragedy
We are saddened by the tragic news that on June 12, a gunman in Orlando, Florida, opened fire at the Pulse nightclub leaving 49 people dead and more than 50 injured. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends who are suffering in Florida and elsewhere due to this tragedy.
Connecticut Council for Philanthropy is committed to helping CCP members and the community connect to the networks and resources it needs to respond when tragedy or disaster strikes. Florida Philanthropic Network (FPN), CCP's colleague organization in Florida, has shared information about how individuals and the philanthropic community can extend support in their time of need. CCP Member Responses to the Orlando Tragedy
Ironically, just a week before the Orlando tragedy, Fairfield County's Community Foundation was writing a commentary, "The Role of Community Foundations," on the foundation's response to the tragedy in Sandy Hook. The commentary emphasises the unique role foundations can take in longer-term needs and responses. President & CEO Juanita James was able to reach out with suggestions to their sister organization, the Central Florida Foundation, and also wrote an op-ed, "Honoring Those Lost in Orlando."
The Cigna Foundation assisted victims of the Orlando shooting, and their loved ones, through a $75,000 grant to the OneOrlando Fund established by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “We hope our grant can play a part in the healing process for a nation in mourning,” said David Figliuzzi, executive director of the Cigna Foundation. Cigna began offering phone counseling at no charge for anyone coping with loss, anxiety, stress, fear or other issues related to the Orlando shooting. Those without Cigna benefits can call 866-912-1687, 24/7, through July 8. Customers who have health benefits or employee assistance programs through Cigna are invited to call the telephone number on their Cigna I.D. card. Read more >>
Everyday Democracy, a project of the Paul J. Aicher Foundation, whose mission is to help communities talk and work together to create communities that work for everyone, has posted three responsive blogs, "Hate and Violence Belong in History Books - Not the News," "How People Have Already Taken Action in the Wake of Orlando," and "Our Differences Do Not Have to Become Our Divisions."
Let us know how your organization has responded. Send us an email.
Funder Preparation and Resources
Also a week before the Orlando tragedy and three weeks before the destructive West Virginia flooding, CCP President Maggie Osborn gave her pitch for funders to be prepared.
"If our recent history in Connecticut and around the world tells us anything, it is that disaster does not discriminate, and whether natural or man-made, their frequency is increasing. So how should philanthropy be prepared? Does philanthropy play a unique role in responding? We invite you to take a moment and think about these questions and to access some resources." Read more >>

CCP's national network, the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers (Forum), has helped the network to share information and resources for the general public and member funders to be informed about the Orlando tragedy. On June 22, the Forum co-hosted a National Teleconference for Funders: Response to Orlando Shooting for funders concerned about this tragedy and how to best respond. Other co-hosts include Funders for LGBTQ Issues, Change Philanthropy, AAPIP, ABFE, Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy, Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees, Hispanics in Philanthropy, Native Americans in Philanthropy and Women’s Funding Network. Listen to the recording >>
A second teleconference will focus on community groups working on the front lines in Orlando and in a third teleconference will cover the longer-terms needs and responses.
Three-year Reflection: Outgoing CCP President Translates CT Experience
Maggie Gunther Osborn has been the president of the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy (CCP) since May 2013. She leaves CCP on June 30 to assume the post of chief strategy officer at CCP’s national organization, the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers (FORUM), on August 1.
Before joining the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers in Washington, DC, I want to offer my deep thanks to the extraordinary members, partners and colleagues who have worked alongside me. In them I have found leaders who are investing their social, moral, intellectual, political and financial capital every day on behalf of the people of our state. Connecticut is full of hope and promise because of their dedication and talent, and I have been fortunate to have served as part of this community of learners and leaders. With them, I have indeed learned a great deal. Let me share a few thoughts that have been on my mind as I translate my experience in Connecticut to our national association >>
None Better: New Britain Captures All-America City Award
The National Civic League has designated New Britain a 2016 All-America City (AAC), one of only 10 communities nationwide to be honored. The All-America City Award celebrates and recognizes neighborhoods, villages, towns, cities, counties, tribes and regions nationwide that engage residents in innovative, inclusive and effective efforts to tackle critical challenges. A team of 11 New Britain stakeholders from the government, business, education and non-profit communities competed against 19 other AAC finalists, taking off on the theme “New Britain: None Better.”
The 2016 award highlighted communities that have developed innovative solutions to ensure all children are healthy and supported to succeed in school and in life. The Coalition for New Britain’s Youth applied for the award on the city’s behalf, highlighting New Britain’s collaborative success in combatting chronic absenteeism, reducing summer learning loss and improving the health of children and youth.
The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, the Coalition’s fiscal agent and single-largest supporter as part of the Foundation’s First Years First early childhood development initiative, committed up to $10,000 to support the Denver delegation’s travel and related expenses.
“We couldn’t be more proud of our Coalition members and the community as a whole in achieving this major honor,” said Jim Williamson, president of the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain. “This proves that collaboration works, and that a collective commitment to working together as a community to achieve new heights can pay dividends that will resonate for years to come.” Read more >>
Education, Community Stakeholders Call for New, Equitable School Funding System
A collection of nonprofit organizations, education leaders, and policymakers recently released a joint statement calling on the State to replace its broken school finance system with one that gives all students a fair chance at success. The Connecticut School Finance Project is a diverse group of Connecticut education, community, and social service stakeholders that have united in an effort to fix how the state funds its public schools.
"Connecticut currently finds itself with a school finance system that not only defies logic, but also funds public schools arbitrarily and inequitably," said Katie Roy, director and founder of the Connecticut School Finance Project. "School finance is an issue that impacts every student, family, school, and community in our state. Connecticut needs, and deserves, an equitable school finance system that is based on the learning needs of students and the schools that serve them."
The Connecticut School Finance Project, a project of Third Sector New England, is entirely funded through foundation support. Read more >>
Foundation Provides Early Literacy Grants - $30K Over 3 Years for 3 School Districts
Public school districts in Bristol, East Haven, and Waterbury have been awarded three-year grants from the Liberty Bank Foundation to provide early literacy programming for at-risk students in grades Pre-K through 3.
"Liberty Bank Foundation’s Early Literacy Grant Program addresses the achievement gap between students of low income and their more affluent peers," said Sue Murphy, executive director of the Liberty Bank Foundation. "Helping children read at grade level by the time they enter fourth grade decreases the risks of them falling behind in school, dropping out, and experiencing even more negative outcomes later on." Look Who Has A New Name
The commmunity foundation that has been serving the residents of the Northwest Connecticut region for more than 45 years, has adopted a new name, Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation. Their new name and logo represents their immutable service to Northwest Connecticut.
Founded in 1969 through a $15,000 gift from the Torrington Club, the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation has grown–through the benevolence of community members and the financial stewardship of staff and volunteers—to a $90 million endowment that supported the Northwest Corner with $4.3 million in grants and scholarship in 2015.
"We are humbled by our modest beginnings, dedicated to our Northwest Corner, and honored to continue to serve as your Community Foundation," said Guy Rovezzi, Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation President. "We look forward to tomorrow’s challenges with a commitment to performance and a vision of leadership that make us Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation in name, in spirit, and in practice."
