Barnes Grant to Fund Southington Drug Addiction and Prevention Efforts

SOUTHINGTON, CT -- A wellness grant from the Bradley Barnes and Leila Upson Barnes Memorial Trust is helping local groups educate teachers on drug trends, fund treatment for addicted youth and provide more counseling services to families of the addicted. Main Street Community Foundation, which oversees the trust, gave $25,600 to LISA Inc., a local non-profit which is partnering with the Southington Town-Wide Effort to Promote Success and the town’s Youth Services to provide addiction prevention and treatment.

Thousands of Seniors, Disabled and Low-income Residents Losing Care Coverage

HARTFORD, CT -- Roughly 68,000 seniors and disabled residents will lose access to a Medicare financial assistance program Jan. 1, when income eligibility requirements change under the newly enacted state budget. Most people likely won’t know they are losing coverage until they receive written notices next month, according to Rosana Garcia, policy associate at the Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut, an advocacy group.

HMF FitKids Awards Grade Schoolers for Running Accomplishments

EAST HARTFORD, CT -- 1,800 school students from 39 schools across Connecticut took part in HMF FitKids in School Medal Day recently — the culmination of weeks of training supported by the Hartford Marathon Foundation. Transportation, snacks and hats were provided free to the schools through the HMF FitKids in School sponsors, including the Aetna Foundation, United Bank Foundation Connecticut, Newman’s Own Foundation and Mountain Dairy, as well as individual donations from the running community.
