Special Funder Cohort: Exploring the Values and Practices of Participatory and Community-Led Grantmaking
Join the Council for this special cohort program for funders exploring meaningful ways to incorporate community voices in the philanthropic process.
Participatory and community-led grantmaking are powerful approaches gaining momentum. Funders are increasingly recognizing that relationships and accountability to community are crucial to effective philanthropy and that communities closest to an issue bring critical analysis, expertise and solutions that can improve philanthropic impact.
In this special cohort we’ll take a deep dive into the theory and practice of grantmaking that centers equity and develops authentic community partnerships. We’ll explore approaches that support accountability, transparency, collaboration, and power-sharing, and set funders on a course that builds trust and empowers communities.
Guided by Council staff with unique expertise and experience in this area, we’ll incorporate curated resources, guest speakers, and peer learning to provide real-world guidance on how to implement effective approaches to grantmaking that build trust and honor community ideas and leadership.
Who should attend?
This series is open to all Council members and is a space for grantmaking staff and leadership in all phases of engagement in this area.
Whether learning and exploring, or actively engaging in practice, this cohort will provide you with the opportunity for a deep dive into theory & practice and time to learn, connect and strategize with your peers.

Session 4: June 24, 9:30 to 1:00 – final session includes cohort luncheon
Sessions will take place in-person in Hamden and New Haven. (6/3 and 6/24 at the Graustein Memorial Fund in Hamden; 6/10 and 6/17 at the United Way of Greater New Haven.)
Remote access will be available through Zoom, but we do encourage attending in-person for the full community-building experience.
The sessions will build on each other, and we ask that participants commit to attending all four sessions.

Series Cost: $349 for members; $699 for non-members.
