United Way 2-1-1 Continues to Respond to Hurricane Needs

ROCKY HILL, CT -- Recent natural disasters have resulted in United Way of Connecticut 2-1-1 supporting relief efforts both nationally and in Connecticut. Thanks to support from Connecticut United Ways and the State of Connecticut, 2-1-1 Connecticut has provided direct relief, helped coordinate relief efforts and is now working as part of the State's Emergency Management Unified Command response to support those evacuated or displaced by recent and tragic natural disasters.

40 Years On, Community Foundation Continues Its Giving Mission

NEW CANAAN, CT -- Over the past 40 years, the foundation has given to local nonprofits in a range of areas, including youth programs, human services, elderly and special needs, health care and arts and culture. In 1987, its grants topped $100,000 and it distributed $1 million in grants in 2013. The foundation also awards over $100,000 worth of scholarships to students, many from the Sapienza Scholarship Fund established in 2007.

WATERBURY, CT -- Barbara Bradbury-Pape of Woodbury, Elizabeth Johnson of Cheshire, John Newton of Warren, and Rabbi Eric Polokoff of Southbury, have been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Connecticut Community Foundation, which serves 21 towns in Greater Waterbury and Litchfield Hills.

HARTFORD, CT -- Connecticut’s rural residents die at higher rates than their city and suburban counterparts and a large percentage of those deaths may be preventable if better public health programs or better access to health care services were available, according to the latest data from the National Center for Health Statistics. Nancy Heaton, CEO for the Foundation for Community Health in Sharon, said Litchfield County has studied options to improve transportation.
