Community Livability in Connecticut

Connecticut’s Legislative Commission on Aging has produced their second annual report to the Connecticut General Assembly on their livable communities initiative. Connecticut’s population is aging, and that demographic transformation is both dramatic and permanent. Recognizing a growing urgency to plan for changing Connecticut communities, the Connecticut General Assembly empowered Connecticut’s Legislative Commission on Aging to spearhead a livable communities initiative. Livable communities are places that foster independence and support residents across the lifespan.

In 2014–15, the Latino Endowment Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving focused on the issue of English Language Learners (ELL)* through a series of forums. Valuing the Invaluable: 2015 Update on Family Caregiving

In 2013, about 40 million family caregivers in the United States provided an estimated 37 billion hours of care to an adult with limitations in daily activities. The estimated economic value of their unpaid contributions was approximately $470 billion in 2013, up from an estimated $450 billion in 2009.

Liberty Bank Foundation presented its annual forum for nonprofits and funders on June 4, entitled, “Sustaining Collective Impact: Finding Progress in Process.” Keynote speakers were Greg Hills and Melissa Oomer from FSG Group, a thought leader in the collective impact arena. Breakouts focused on local collective impact initiatives, including the Middlesex County Coalition on Housing and Homelessness and the Coalition for New Britain’s Youth.

Leadership New England, a new study of nonprofit executives and board members in the region, reports that two-thirds (64%) of executives plan to leave their jobs within the next five years, 60% of organizations do not have succession plans, and just one-third of leaders believe they have staff in their organization who can step up into leadership positions.
Arts & Economic Prosperity 5

The Arts & Economic Prosperity 5, released in late June, was conducted by Americans for the Arts (AFTA) and documents the economic impact of the nonprofit arts and culture industry. Connecticut Office of the Arts and 6 CT regional arts councils participated as study partners and helped to fuel the largest study of its kind.
