TORRINGTON, CT -- The Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation Women & Girls Fund has awarded $5,000 in grants in support of two local child care centers that are working to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 at their facilities.
- Winsted Area Child Care Center was awarded $2,500 toward their Northwest Corner Gives crowdfunding goal to help cover increased operating expenses needed for renovations, PPE, and cleaning supplies and to help offset a required reduction in enrollment in order to accommodate safer physical distancing in the facility.
“WACCC must be able to adapt to the care needs of our community while still remaining compliant with government agencies and fiscally solvent,” said Rachel Tway-Grant, Executive Director.

“The [grant support] can keep women in the workplace, [they can] feel confident about providing for their family and know that their child is in a Child Care Center where their child is safe, healthy and happy,” said Frances Chapell, Director. “We are proud to be an educational organization, but families basic needs must come first.”
Established as a giving circle in 1999 by a small group of women who shared a concern for the real-life needs of local women and girls, the Women & Girls Fund has awarded more than $60,000 to organizations that work to help women and girls develop skills, attain economic security, and improve their quality of life.
In recent years, the Fund has awarded grants to support childcare scholarships for working mothers, assist unemployed women to enter the workforce, provide automobiles to working women who need transportation, enhance economic opportunities and promote self-sufficiency for women leaving abusive relationships, and fund leadership and assertiveness workshops for high school girls.

Established in 1969, the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation serves 20 towns in Northwest Connecticut. Its total endowment, comprised of more than 280 funds, has grown from initial assets of $15,000 to almost $102 million. Last year, combined grants and scholarships totaled $4 million.
