HARTFORD, CT -- Nearly $1 million in federal support for food, emergency shelters, and homeless prevention services has been awarded to 25 non-profits and municipalities in Hartford County, according to United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut.
United Way administers the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) and also facilitates the Local Board of Hartford County, a group of community volunteers that decide on allocation of funds within federal guidelines.
In addition to the EFSP program, Hartford County was also eligible for federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic (CARES) Act funding to support those impacted by COVID-19, bringing the total federal resources to nearly $1 million.
The funds will help to supplement the work of local social service organizations and municipalities to support people in need of emergency assistance including emergency shelters; food distributed through Foodshare; and, homeless prevention services through rent, mortgage, and/or energy assistance.
“These federal funds are needed now more than ever,” said Jennifer Pettit, Hartford County Board Chair and Senior Manager, Community Investment, United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut. “We’ve seen an increase in need for emergency services throughout our county as a result of the pandemic. The non-profits and municipals receiving these funds will be able to serve the growing need and help individuals in our community during a most challenging time.”
