Foundation Announces Transitional Support to Alleviate Public Funding Cuts
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving is working with area nonprofits to determine the impact of state budget cuts and how they can assist communities reeling from the state fiscal crisis. Faced with declining revenues and increased costs, both the state and many municipalities are making significant budget cuts that impact service delivery through the region’s nonprofits to the neediest.
As a first step, the Foundation has allocated $1 million from its general grantmaking budget to assist qualifying nonprofits affected by unexpected losses of support, particularly in the areas of critical human services. For long-term effectiveness, the Foundation is also providing capacity building and sustaining strategies to help nonprofits address the changing funding environment in a sustainable way. Government vs. Foundation Support
In fiscal year 2013, expenditures for the Connecticut General Fund were $19 billion, clearly dwarfing the $999 million given by Connecticut foundations. Connecticut is home to 1,607 foundations, including community foundations that serve every town in the state in addition to providing grant support. These foundations help solve critical issues by: convening business, government and nonprofit leaders; finding and testing innovative solutions; and sharing knowledge. While foundations cannot replace state funding, the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy and the foundation community have a history of playing a vital role partnering with government on issues such as regional economic development, energy and climate, workforce development and early childhood education.

$1.4M for Youth Creating Safe Streets, Strong Neighborhoods
Newman’s Own Foundation has committed $1.4 million over 4 years to the Hartford Youth Service Corps Program to help create jobs for youths and improve the community. Newman’s Own Foundation was a lead funder for the program, which now has five other funders. The program is aimed at combatting the city’s youth unemployment crisis by providing part-time, year-long employment to city youths, ages 16 to 24 who are out of school and out of work.
"Supporting Hartford's Youth Service Corps is a natural extension of the Newman’s Own Foundation commitment to empower people and communities. Through our grant making, we continue Paul Newman’s legacy of giving and creating opportunities, said Bob Forrester, President and CEO of Newman’s Own Foundation. “Youth Service Corps is a very special way to engage city youth in employment, while at the same time provide experiences and support for their continued development as productive and contributing members of society. In Memoriam: Remembering A Past CCP Leader, James Mason, Jr.
Last month James Mason, Jr. passed away. Jim retired from Cigna Corporation in 1999 as manager of contributions and civic affairs where he oversaw the Cigna Foundation's Hartford area budget that made gifts to local nonprofits. 1999 was also the year Jim completed his board terms of service to the Coordinating Council of Foundations.
Jim's board service was from 1991 to 1999, with two terms as the board chair from 1996-1998. It was during Jim's leadership in 1997, with support from the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, the United Way of Greater New Haven and others, that the Coordinating Council expanded to serve Greater New Haven. And in 1999, to reflect its state-wide leadership, the Coordinating Council changed its name to the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy. Read James Mason's obituary >>

Joanne Borduas of Waterbury and Maria Gonzalez of Torrington have been named to the executive committee of the Women & Girls Fund of the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation. The Women & Girls Fund annually awards grants to a diverse group of organizations whose programs improve the lives of women and girls and their families.
Joanne Borduas is president and chief executive officer of the Community Health and Wellness Center in Torrington, overseeing the center’s operations of about 30,000 patient visits annually and ensuring effective systems to promote overall community health and address disparities that could lessen access to health care.
Maria Gonzalez is the Family Development Center manager at the Torrington office of New Opportunities. An advocate for the Latino community, Maria established The Northwest CT Latina Woman Association in 2013. Read more >>
The Connecticut Health Foundation (CT Health) elected Gregory B. Butler as chair of its board of directors during its recent quarterly meeting. Mr. Butler, a member of the CT Health board since July 2006, is senior vice president and general counsel of Eversource Energy, and serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Eversource Energy Foundation.
“As we seek to embark on a new strategic plan for CT Health, we are excited to have Mr. Butler as chair with his vast experience and business perspective,” said CT Health President & CEO Patricia Baker. “He is leading our board during a time when our state and health system are facing challenges. We look forward to addressing these challenges together, and continuing our mission of expanding health equity.”

Fairfield County’s Community Foundation has announced the appointment of Elaine Mintz as the vice president of operations. Elaine will continue in her role leading the Center of Nonprofit Excellence and is now responsible for advancing FCCF’s human capital management plan and strategic goal-setting process.

As executive director at Junta for Progressive Action, Sandra collaborates with the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation (YCCI) to increase the representation of New Haven’s Latino community in clinical trials. United Way of Western Connecticut (UWWC) is proud to announce that Kim Morgan, CEO of UWWC, has been named a board member of the National ALICE Advisory Council. The National ALICE Advisory Council is a body of corporate and national organizations convened to elevate ALICE’s voice to a national level. United Way identifies ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) as a population that in many cases works multiple jobs, but cannot make ends meet.
“We are thrilled that Kim has been named to this Council,” said Cynthia Merkle, Board Chair, UWWC’s Board of Directors. “Her appointment is a testament to the work that United Way of Western Connecticut has done in the past two years to increase awareness of households in our communities living paycheck to paycheck.
