NEW HAVEN, CT — Avangrid, Inc. and its Connecticut subsidiaries, The United Illuminating Company, The Southern Connecticut Gas Company and Connecticut Natural Gas Corporation, announced today they distributed $268,000 to 39 nonprofit organizations, through the State of Connecticut’s Neighborhood Assistance Act (NAA).
Representatives from the nonprofits gathered at the Energize CT Center in North Haven, Conn. to accept the donations and discuss how the money will be used.
“Our green jobs program, which trains young people to enter the renewable energy field, will directly benefit from this donation,” said Joanne Sciulli, founder and executive director of Solar Youth, Inc., a youth advocacy group based in New Haven, CT.
Since beginning its involvement with the NAA in 2010, AVANGRID’S Connecticut subsidiaries have donated $2,235,000 to nonprofit organizations. AVANGRID’S Connecticut subsidiaries focus on nonprofits that use the donations for energy conservation projects. For instance, the Fairfield Theatre Company in Fairfield, Conn. has used the donation to install LED lighting in its new “Warehouse” concert hall.
“We have been able to save a substantial amount of money off our electric bill,” said Joseph Rog, the theatre’s director of development.
The NAA is designed to provide funding for municipal and tax exempt organizations by providing a corporate business tax credit for businesses that make cash contributions to these entities. Among the 2015 beneficiaries are the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, Inc., which will use the donation to help install an energy efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, and all three state chapters of Habitat for Humanity.
“AVANGRID is dedicated to investing in clean energy projects across the country. Part of that effort is supporting our community partners who are taking steps to become more energy efficient,” said AVANGRID CEO James P. Torgerson.
