NEW LONDON, CT -- The Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut (CFECT) announces an unprecedented level of college scholarships made possible through the generosity of donors who believe in the power of education to change lives. More than 260 students from its 42 communities in Eastern Connecticut were selected by The Foundation’s Scholarship Committees to receive over $700,000 in single and multi-year awards.
“We are very fortunate that our donors share with us a resolve to remove the financial barriers for area students as they pursue their educational dreams and to create opportunities where few to none exist,” said Maryam Elahi, President and CEO of the Community Foundation. “Every child is important and whether it is through the arts, sciences, humanities or technical/vocational training, education is the catalyst for a brighter future for them and for our society.”
Closing the “opportunity gap” by making higher education more accessible to the region’s youth has long been a strategic priority for The Foundation. Scholarships are one of the critical ways to close this gap especially over the last decade when tuition costs have skyrocketed.

I came here from the Philippines when I was thirteen years old. Being separated from my mom and seeing the sacrifices my parents made to give us a better future motivated me to work hard to make sure their sacrifices don’t go to waste. I selected SCSU because of their outstanding feedback not only about their nursing program but also about the school in general. I also love the diversity on campus and the vibrant community in the university as well as the places that surround it. I am an incoming freshman who aspires to be a nurse in the future who makes a change in the world one workday at a time.

Growing up in a military family I have always wanted to pursue a career helping others and Massachusetts Maritime Academy was perfect for that. Majoring in Emergency Management with a minor in Homeland Security opens numerous career opportunities in public service.
Jocelyn Hoagland, Willimantic
Since I was 5 years old I knew that music was going to be my niche in life. For some people it’s dancing, for others it’s sports - for me it’s music. Furthering my education so that I can be better at my craft means a lot to me. This scholarship is so important to me because I wouldn’t be able to attend college without the scholarship help.
