TORRINGTON, CT -- Southside Café’s George Mazzaferro Memorial Fund, a fund of The Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation has awarded the Northwestern Connecticut YMCA and YMCA Camp Mohawk $1,560 in support of camperships for local children.
Contributions to the Fund, which supports organizations that benefit local children, were raised through an annual Poker Run fundraiser held in honor of Fund namesake, George Mazzaferro.
“Camp Mohawk’s Trustees are committed to making the YMCA summer camp experience available to all girls regardless of ability to pay, especially girls in our local community,” said Patrick Marchand, executive director of YMCA Camp Mohawk.
“The grant from the Southside Café’s George Mazzaferro Memorial Fund helps make this possible and is deeply appreciated.”
George Mazzaferro, a Torrington native, was the proprietor of many restaurants, including Pig n’ Whistle, Towne Tavern and South Side Café on South Main Street, which he established in 1990 with his daughter, Catherine Mazzaferro.
A motorcycle and hotrod enthusiast, Mr. Mazzaferro retired in 2011 with plans to restore motorcycles and hotrods and spend time with his grandchildren. Tragically, just four days later, he suffered a fatal head injury.
Established in 1969, the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation serves 20 towns in Northwest Connecticut. Its total endowment, comprised of more than 250 funds, has grown from initial assets of $15,000 to more than $94 million. Last year, combined grants and scholarships totaled more than $3 million.
