NEW BRITAIN and WATERBURY, CT -- The cities of New Britain and Waterbury have made significant progress on many key human services issues over the past decade, according to the “2018: A Demographic, Social & Environmental Scan,” reports released by the American Savings Foundation. The Foundation released a separate report for each city.

The comprehensive reports draw together data from a wide variety of sources on more than 50 important indicators, from housing costs to preschool enrollment to high school graduation rates.

“Our board wants to understand how the work we and so many others are doing is helping to ‘move the needle.’  This report also helps identify where future investments can make the greatest impact,” said Maria Falvo, president and CEO of American Savings Foundation.

“There are a number of positive trends in this report,” Falvo continues.  “One example in both cities is the reduction in the rate of births to teen mothers from 2006 to 2014.  Although these rates remain higher than the state average, the progress is encouraging.”

The reports also highlight a decline in the number of juvenile arrests from 2007 to 2015, down 57% in Waterbury and 62% in New Britain during that time period.

However, the reports also show that the cities face a number of challenges and continue to lag behind state averages in several major areas.  For example, more families continue to live below the poverty level as compared to the state average in both cities.

“New Britain and Waterbury have a tremendous wealth of nonprofit organizations, community leaders, parents, educators, and policy makers all working together to address those needs,” said Falvo.  “We hope this report helps provide access to additional data and resources that can inform how we and others support that work.”

The studies were conducted as part of the Foundation’s strategic planning

Fio Partners, LLC conducted the research for both reports.  They are available on the Foundation’s website: www.asfdn.org, or by calling the office at 860-827-2556 to request a printed copy.

American Savings Foundation is a permanent charitable endowment that provides grants to local nonprofit organizations, and college scholarships to area students.  Since its inception in 1995, the Foundation has contributed more than $54 million in total grants and scholarships in central Connecticut.
