DANBURY, CT -- United Way of Western Connecticut has received a generous grant from the Genworth Foundation. The $10,000 grant will fund United Way's targeted efforts to support the needs of the hard-working, struggling individuals and families it calls ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). United Way of Western Connecticut serves people who live in the City of Stamford, Northern Fairfield County, and Southern Litchfield County.
Through this grant, United Way will continue to offer the innovative programs it has created to help struggling families and their children, including:
- Stamford Cradle to Career – A community-wide effort to ensure equity and excellence in education for every Stamford child, from cradle to career.
- The ALICE Enrichment Fund – Provides up to $300 per child per year to pay for out-of-school activities for children in ALICE Families. Activities covered include swimming lessons, sports fees and equipment, music and dance lessons, and arts and robotics programs.
- Child Care and After-School Subsidies – Provide funding that allows children in lower-income families to attend quality early care and after-school programs. Without these subsidies, ALICE families might have to resort to lower-quality, substandard care for their children.
- Healthy Savings – Helps the 50% of ALICE households that struggle to pay for food. Healthy Savings offers a discount card and a mobile app that allows users to purchase $20 of fresh produce for $10 each week, as well as discounts of up to 30% on other healthy foods.
