Funding to Provide 120 Books for United Way Read Aloud Event

ENFIELD, CT -- United Way of North Central Connecticut Regional Advisory Board today announced a $1,000 award for an early literacy program that benefits children in Enfield.

The award, approved by an advisory board of local leadership volunteers, provides support for a health-themed United Way Read Aloud event at the Stowe Early Learning Center in Enfield. Funding will be used to buy 120 books that will be read by volunteers in classrooms before being sent home with students.

United Way is committed to ensuring children start school ready to succeed, become proficient readers by the time they enter fourth grade, stay on track in middle school, earn their high school diploma and are are prepared for college or career.

“United Way believes education is the foundation for success in school, work and life,” said Steven Casey, Chair, United Way of North Central Connecticut Regional Advisory Board. “United Way and our partners are proud to unite to raise awareness of the importance of early literacy and help empower students to succeed in and out of the classroom.”

On March 7, 2018 volunteers will read a health-themed book by Dr. Seuss to classrooms of students at Stowe Early Learning Center.

ShopRite in Enfield, a United Way community partner, will provide materials for a craft focused on healthy eating for children to create after the reading session. The books and crafts will then be gifted to students to help build their home libraries.
