Organization, Partners Finding the Best Way to Help Our Communities
NEW BRITAIN, CT -- United Way of New Britain and Berlin Regional Advisory Board today announced $14,400 in awards for programs and partnerships that benefit children, youth and families in local communities.
“These programs enable more children and youth to succeed in school, help families to achieve financial security, lead healthier lives and have access to basic needs services,” said William Dowling, Chair, United Way of New Britain and Berlin Regional Advisory Board. “Together, with our partners, we can build stronger communities and help our hard-working families.”
New Britain Food and Resource Center, managed by Human Resources Agency of New Britain
United Way has awarded funds to support the New Britain Food and Resource Center managed by Human Resources Agency of New Britain. The center will provide food, case management and connections to other resources for a minimum of 500 lower-income families or up to 1,000 people residing in New Britain during the 2018 calendar year.
Sixty-three percent of households in New Britain struggle to afford basic needs, according to a Connecticut United Way ALICE Report. This includes households living in poverty and those whose earnings are above the federal poverty level but less than the basic cost of living for the city. (ALICE is an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.)
Building Hope Together: Path to Employment managed by the YWCA of New Britain
In support of Building Hope Together (formerly the Mayor’s Plan to End Homelessness), United Way has provided funding to the Path to Employment program which removes barriers that stand in the way of people finding and keeping employment such as transportation, uniforms and licensure. This strategy of the Employment Committee will support 100 individuals this year.
City of New Britain 2-1-1 Kiosks
United Way 2-1-1 connects callers, at no cost, to critical health and human services in their community. With funding from United Way a 2-1-1 kiosk will be installed at City Hall. Residents will have access to both a phone and online
