Hometown Heroes Benefit Dinner to be held Sat. Dec. 2 at Amber Room Colonnade in Danbury

DANBURY, CT -- Danbury is a city of heroes, and United Way of Western Connecticut (UWWC) is thrilled to honor several at its 4th Annual Hometown Heroes Benefit Dinner on Saturday, December 2, 2017, including:

  • Corporate Philanthropy Award Union Savings Bank

  • Small Business Hero Award Elmer Palma, Elmer’s Diner

  • Hometown Heroes Celia Bacelar-Palmares, Emanuela Palmares and Angela Barbosa of Tribuna Media and The New American Dream Foundation

  • Emerging Hero Kendra Dascano

“Our Hometown Hero and our Emerging Hero awardees have all made deep and unique contributions to the fabric of their local communities,” said Kimberly Morgan, CEO of United Way of Western Connecticut. “It is such a pleasure to be able to shine a light on their accomplishments and service.” Nominees were selected based on several criteria, including achievement, action, commitment, impact and initiative.

Corporate Philanthropy Award Union Savings Bank
Headquartered in Danbury, Union Savings Bank has a deep and abiding commitment to the community and has an extensive record of corporate philanthropy throughout Greater Danbury. In the past six years alone, Union Savings Bank and the USB Foundation together contributed nearly $6,000,000 back into our communities, and employees have volunteered over 100,000 hours to local non-profits.

Small Business Hero Award Elmer Palma
Elmer Palma is a local restauranteur and is well-known as the owner of Elmer’s Diner in Danbury. Elmer has an extensive record of community service, particularly around Danbury’s youth. In addition, he serves on the Executive Board of Jericho Partnership and serves on Danbury’s City Council for the 2nd Ward. He has been honored by Tribuna and the Greater Danbury Bar Association for his long-standing contributions to the Danbury community.

Hometown Heroes Celia Bacelar-Palmares, Emanuela Palmares and Angela Barbosa
Celia, Emanuela and Angela, as well as the rest of the Tribuna Newspaper family, are well-known throughout the greater Danbury community as community leaders and advocates, particularly to the robust immigrant/New American community, publishing the bi-monthly Tribuna Newspaper, the largest trilingual publication in the state of Connecticut. They have also established a nonprofit foundation, The New American Dream Foundation, which celebrates and supports the cultural, social and economic contributions of all immigrants, while supporting the core American values of equal opportunity, progress and freedom in the areas of education, health and civic engagement.

Emerging Hero Kendra Dascano
New to the Hometown Heroes Benefit Dinner are Emerging Hero Awards for area high school-aged youth who demonstrate strong leadership in volunteerism and community service. We are pleased to announce that Kendra Dascano will be the recipient of the Emerging Hero Award for Danbury. A senior at Immaculate High School, Kendra is a member of the executive team of the Youth Advisory Board, which leads the Youth Volunteer Corps of Western Connecticut. While she is being honored as Danbury’s Emerging Hero, her volunteerism extends regionally, including Regional Hospice, Village Center for the Arts, Newtown Kindness, The Joseph Middlemiss Big Heart Foundation, Ben's Bells, Interfaith Aids Ministry, Boni Bel Farm and Pratt Nature Center.

Proceeds from the Hometown Heroes Benefit Dinner will benefit United Way’s ALICE Enrichment Fund, which provides funding for children from struggling households in each of our 15-town regional footprint to engage in extracurricular activities to drive achievement in and out of the classroom. United Way of Western Connecticut (UWWC) improves the lives of hard-working, struggling households by mobilizing the resources of local communities to create lasting change. We help residents across Northern Fairfield County, Southern Litchfield County and the City of Stamford by focusing on the vital building blocks for a good life: Education, Financial Stability and Health. We are committed to ensuring that every child enters school ready to learn, every family is financially stable, and every community we serve is healthy and strong. We are particularly focused on a population that United Way identifies as ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) in our communities. A United Way report published in October 2016 revealed that in Connecticut, more than 1 in 4 households has earnings above the Federal Poverty Level, but below a basic cost-of-living threshold. Combined with those who are struggling below poverty level, 38% of all households in the state are experiencing financial hardship. By leveraging the collective power of the community, we are focused on creating an environment where individuals and families are self-sufficient and can achieve financial independence.
