United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut Provides an Additional $62,000 to Help Displaced Residents

Neighbors in Need Fund to Help Children and Families in Local Communities

HARTFORD, CT -- United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut today announced that it has awarded an additional $62,000 to nonprofit organizations and school systems that are helping children and families who have relocated from hurricane-affected areas and others needing basic human services.

The $62,000 in grants come one month after United Way awarded six community organizations $100,000, for a total of $162,000 in community support from Neighbors in Need.

The following organizations are the latest to receive the funds:

  • Community Renewal Team (CRT) - $15,000 to provide direct financial assistance for housing.

  • East Hartford Public Schools - $15,000 to add additional bilingual staff to provide academic and other supports for recently arrived non-English speaking students.

  • John J. Driscoll United Labor Agency - $2,000 for emergency food assistance and staffing support to provide families with advocacy and referrals, job coaching and counseling services.

  • The Village for Families and Children - $15,000 to provide mental health treatment to children and families.

  • Windham Public Schools - $15,000 to add additional bilingual staff to provide academic and other supports for recently arrived non-English speaking students.

As of February 14, United Way has provided Neighbors in Need funding to the following 11 organizations:

  • ACCESS Agency in Windham

  • Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of Hartford

  • Community Renewal Team

  • Consolidated School District of New Britain

  • East Hartford Public Schools

  • Hispanic Health Council

  • John J. Driscoll United Labor Agency

  • The Salvation Army

  • The Village for Families and Children

  • United Way of Connecticut 2-1-1

  • Windham Public Schools

United Way continues to accept contributions for Neighbors in Need. Individual contributions are being matched dollar for dollar up to $100,000; 100% of funds collected will be awarded to qualified organizations on a monthly basis.

2-1-1, a service of Connecticut United Ways in partnership with the State of Connecticut, is fielding calls from hurricane victims and their families, predominately those affected by Hurricane Maria.

As of February 14, 2-1-1 has received more than 8,800 service requests statewide. More than 3,950 of these requests came from residents in central and northeastern Connecticut, with the majority from Hartford. Top needs identified in calls to 2-1-1 are accessing Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster relief services, housing and relocation and food (e.g. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and food pantries.
