HARTFORD, CT -- United Way has made 12 awards in its first round of grants from its COVID-19 response fund, Neighbors in Need. The grants, totaling $127,000 will support local nonprofits in delivering important services to those most impacted by the pandemic. The awards will ensure that local families receive assistance related to rent; utilities; food; and, tele-health.
Understanding that the needs of our communities continue to grow and evolve, United Way launched its Neighbors in Need emergency response fund in late March.
“We stand with our community – residents, government agencies, the private sector and the nonprofit sector – ready to face the immediate challenges and those that lie ahead,” said Paula S. Gilberto, President and CEO, United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut. “I am grateful to the individual donors and local workplaces for their generosity and to our hardworking partners who are on the frontlines making sure community needs are met. While these times are unprecedented, I am proud to be a part of a community that comes together to support our neighbors.”
The first round of grants, totaling $127,000, are supporting the following community-based organizations:
Food and Emergency Assistance (grocery store cards; food; utility and rental assistance; and, basic household supplies):

Catholic Charities Diocese of Norwich ($10,000; Windham service office)

Catholic Charities, Inc. Archdiocese of Hartford ($20,000)

Family Life Education, Inc., Hartford ($5,000)

Hispanic Health Council, Hartford ($10,000)

Human Resource Agency of New Britain ($10,000)

The Village for Families & Children, Inc., Hartford ($10,000)

United Services, Inc., Windham ($2,000)

Windham Area Interfaith Ministry ($10,000)
Domestic Violence and Shelter: To provide safe shelter and access to basic necessities:

Prudence Crandall Center, Inc., New Britain ($15,000; domestic violence shelter for men, women and children)

Soromundi Commons – YWCA Hartford Region ($10,000; homeless shelter for women)

South Park Inn, Inc., Hartford ($15,000; homeless shelter for individuals and families)
Mental and Behavioral Health: To support technology needs associated with telehealth, etc.:

Community Mental Health Affiliates, New Britain ($10,000)
Additional grants will be made from United Way Neighbors in Need on an ongoing basis.
