NEW YORK, NY -- Futuro Media’s politics podcast, In The Thick, travels to Connecticut this month for two live shows. The roundtable podcast is hosted by award-winning journalists, Maria Hinojosa and Julio Ricardo Varela, and it covers politics, race and culture from the perspective of people of color (POC). In The Thick has hosted a number of live shows around the country and world, from Chicago to Mexico City to Los Angeles.
Live tapings of In The Thick and podcast workshops are made possible through support from the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut and the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund.
“Connecticut is undergoing a demographic transformation, with Latinos making up the largest and fastest growing marginalized group in the state. This will have a serious impact on everything—immigration, education, physical and mental health care,” stated Futuro Media executive director Erika Dilday, “In The Thick travels to Connecticut to speak with local organizers and professors to deeply analyze how these changes affect all of Connecticut.”
In Connecticut, they will first travel to Three Rivers Community College in Norwich on Wednesday, October 16 to host a live show about addiction and mental health in POC communities in Connecticut and nationally. Guests include Kelvin Young, sound healer and certified recovery coach; Kenyatta Thompson, senior community organizer at Katal Center for Health, Equity and Justice; and Taylor Ford, statewide youth and family coordinator with FAVOR, Inc. This event is free and open to the public. For more details and to RSVP, visit ittlivefromctmentalhealth.eventbrite.com.
On Tuesday, October 22, In The Thick will be at Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic to host a second live show about immigration and the Latino community with an emphasis on undocumented youth movements. Guests include Charles Venator-Santiago, associate professor with the Department of Political Science and El Instituto at University of Connecticut, and director of the Puerto Rico Citizenship Archives Project and the Puerto Rico Status Archives Project; Attorney Kica Matos, director of the Center on Immigration and Justice at the Vera Institute of Justice; and Lucas Codognolla, executive director of Connecticut Students for a Dream. Before the two live shows, Digital Media Director and In The Thick Co-host Julio Ricardo Varela along with In The Thick Producer Nicole Rothwell will facilitate a podcasting and storytelling workshop for students at each institution. These workshops are to empower local community members to tell their own community’s stories and equip them with the foundational audio storytelling skillset to do so.
