TORRINGTON, CT -- The Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation has published, Community Crossroads - Northwest Connecticut - Where we are now and were we are headed. Community Crossroads is an extensive research project focused on the demographic composition of Northwest Connecticut communities – now and in the future – and core community wellbeing indicators, such as housing, employment, education, healthcare and crime.
The Community Foundation’s goal with this report is to educate community stakeholders and inspire community discourse in order to build collaborative strategies to protect and enhance the welfare of our region.
Careful analysis of current and historical data indicates 10 readily apparent trends Northwest Connecticut is experiencing:
A rapid increase in the number of seniors
An ongoing decrease in numbers of preschool and school-aged youth
A sharp decline in numbers of young adults
Short-term growth of the millennial population, followed by notable decline
A reduction in the number of available and experienced workers
Diminishing birth rates
Losses in the number of individuals leaving Litchfield County for other states
Gains in the number of individuals moving into Litchfield County from other Connecticut counties
