TORRINGTON, CT -- The Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation has awarded grants to 28 area nonprofit organizations, totaling $104,950 during its third grant cycle of 2019. The Community Foundation awards discretionary grants to Northwest Connecticut charities three times a year: early spring, late June and late fall.
Noteworthy among the recent awards include:
- $1,500 to Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy to support natural science education programs in-school and on-site at the conservancy for Title 1 schools in the foundation’s service area
“The goal of this program is to provide Title 1 Schools with a unique and memorable science learning experience which advances student success and reconnects students with nature,” said Colleen Peters of Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy.
- $1,500 to Wheels of Opportunity to support start-up costs for obtaining 501(c)(3) status for an organization working on a transportation initiative for Northwest Connecticut
“We aim to increase economic opportunity in our region by providing transportation options to individuals and families with limited income,” said David Ferreira of Wheels of Opportunity. “We hope to prove that this model creates a measurable benefit to Northwest CT residents and businesses and that it is used as a guide or framework for other rural communities in Connecticut.”

American Mural Project - $7,500 to support construction costs for stairs that will lead to a viewing platform for the mural and open up access to a program space (from the Marion Wm. & Alice Edwards Fund)
Bethlehem Ambulance Association - $1,500 to support the purchase of supplies for community training for the Stop the Bleed program (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Canaan Child Care Center - $5,800 to support the purchase of a camera system at the new location in North Canaan Elementary School (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Can’d Aid - $7,500 to support the purchase, assembly, and distribution of bikes for the Treads and Trails Program at Title 1 schools in Torrington and Winsted (from the Marion Wm. & Alice Edwards Fund)
Connecticut Association for Human Services - $4,000 to support the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (from the Marion Wm. & Alice Edwards Fund)
Connecticut Public Affairs Network - $3,000 to support the Torrington Region Connecticut History Day Contest (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Covenant To Care for Children - $5,000 to support the purchase of basic essential goods for children to keep families intact (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
EdAdvance - $3,000 to support scholarships for 25 low-income individuals to take driver’s education (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
FISH - $1,700 to support replacement cleaning equipment, a washer, and a refrigerator for the shelter (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Fishes and Loaves (fiscal sponsor: North Canaan Congregational Church) - $8,000 to support roof replacement for Pilgrim House, the food pantry building (from the Marion Wm. & Alice Edwards Fund)
FOCUS Center for Autism - $3,000 to support furniture and equipment for the new annex building (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Goshen Land Trust - $7,000 to support fees and costs associated with Land Trust Alliance Accreditation (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund and The Jeff and Diane Johnson Community Enhancement Fund)
Greenwoods Counseling Referrals - $6,000 to support expanding capacity (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Hands of Grace - $7,000 to support the purchase of a commercial-grade freezer to increase food storage options for the food pantry (from the Marion Wm. & Alice Edwards Fund)
Helping Hands Chore Service - $1,500 to support affordable home care services for seniors (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Literacy Volunteers on the Green - $1,500 to support the purchase of instructional materials (from the Keroden Fund and the Roberta Lee August Fund)
Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy - $1,500 to support natural science education programs in-school and on-site at the conservancy for Title 1 schools in the foundation’s service area (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
McCall Center for Behavioral Health - $3,000 to support one year of intuitive movement integration body awareness and exercise therapy classes to clients in intensive residential substance use treatment (from the Keroden Endowed Fund and the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Mental Health Education Collaborative (fiscal sponsor: McCall Center For Behavioral Health) - $1,500 to support community Mental Health First Aid training for 30 residents (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Music Mountain - $7,400 to support the cost of the mold remediation project (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
New Beginnings - $3,000 to support the cost of severe cold weather supplies and accommodations for homeless clients (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
New Hartford Lions Charities - $1,000 to support replacement windows for the Lions Club building at Brodie Park (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Planned Parenthood of Southern New England - $5,000 to support the cost of healthcare services for low-income patients who qualify for Planned Parenthood’s Torrington Fund for Access (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Torrington Library - $2,200 to support the purchase and installation of audio-visual equipment in the story time room (from the Carlton D. Fyler and Jenny R. Fyler Fund and the Keroden Fund)
Torrington Parks and Recreation Department - $2,800 to support the cost of performing units for the Pageant of Drums (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Torrington Public Schools - $1,500 to support the purchase of materials for a Social Emotional Learning Early Childhood Intervention Program (from the Keroden Fund)
Wheels Of Opportunity (fiscal sponsor: Northwest Hills Council of Governments) - $1,500 to support start-up costs for obtaining 501(c)(3) status for an organization working on a transportation initiative for Northwest Connecticut (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Winsted Senior Center - $4,850 to support the cost of trained instructors to offer free fitness classes for older adults and people with disabilities (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Established in 1969, the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation serves 20 towns in Northwest Connecticut. Its total endowment, comprised of more than 280 funds, has grown from initial assets of $15,000 to almost $102 million. Last year, combined grants and scholarships totaled $4 million.
