NEW YORK, NY -- The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism is excited to announce its first-ever endowed chair, in journalism innovation, and the first designee will be Professor Jeff Jarvis, a world-renowned thought leader on the future of the news business. The Tow Foundation has pledged $1.5 million over five years to support The Leonard Tow Chair for Journalism Innovation, which is named after its founder, a cable television pioneer and philanthropist who has been a principal donor to the CUNY J-School.

SOUTHINGTON, CT -- A wellness grant from the Bradley Barnes and Leila Upson Barnes Memorial Trust is helping local groups educate teachers on drug trends, fund treatment for addicted youth and provide more counseling services to families of the addicted. Main Street Community Foundation, which oversees the trust, gave $25,600 to LISA Inc., a local non-profit which is partnering with the Southington Town-Wide Effort to Promote Success and the town’s Youth Services to provide addiction prevention and treatment.

HARTFORD, CT -- Roughly 68,000 seniors and disabled residents will lose access to a Medicare financial assistance program Jan. 1, when income eligibility requirements change under the newly enacted state budget. Most people likely won’t know they are losing coverage until they receive written notices next month, according to Rosana Garcia, policy associate at the Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut, an advocacy group.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY, CT -- The local public transportation system, 9 Town Transit (9TT), is partnering with the United Way to bring transportation to the residents of Puerto Rico who have landed in Connecticut following the devastating hurricane, Maria. To help provide this service, 9TT has started a fund-raiser. For $59, a donor may purchase a pass that will provide unlimited service on all 9TT bus routes, six days a week for an entire calendar month. Passengers can board a 9TT bus in Middletown, ride down to Old Saybrook, and transfer all the way to Madison or East Lyme.
