Grants to date totaling $3.28 million are supporting basic human needs and other services to local residents
HARTFORD, CT -- In March, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving launched the COVID-19 Response Fund to rapidly deploy resources to support the residents who are most significantly affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The Fund is designed to complement the work of federal, state and municipal government efforts and expand local capacity to address all aspects of the outbreak as efficiently as possible.
"The Foundation created the COVID-19 Response Fund to provide both short- and long-term support, as our community and residents deal with the fallout from the pandemic," said Hartford Foundation president Jay Williams. "We are proud to support our dedicated and committed nonprofit providers who continue to do all they can to respond to the overwhelming increase in demands for the critical services they provide. Included in this third round of grants from the Fund is a grant to support Hartford’s women and minority-owned small businesses that have been left out of some federal stimulus programs. We remain committed to doing all we can to provide immediate assistance to nonprofits and support long-term efforts that will be necessary to stabilize our region in the aftermath of this crisis.”
The third round of grants totaling $1.12 million will support community-based organizations that provide basic human needs and other critical supports to residents with the greatest need.
- Capital for Change - Funding will support the administration and provide support for the Hartford Small Business Emergency Micro Grant Program to help stabilize small neighborhood businesses.$500,000 grant will support re-granting efforts, in partnership with, and matching funding of the City of Hartford to assist small neighborhood businesses in Hartford that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. $505,000
- Community Health Resources - Grant will support lost revenue and continued behavioral health services at facilities in the Greater Hartford region. $40,000
- Community Solutions - Grant will support lost revenue and the increased cleaning, staff, and food costs to continue care for returning citizens in residential programs. $75,000
- Enfield Food Shelf - Grant will support lost revenue, increased food costs, and the expansion to weekly grocery delivery for vulnerable residents. $25,000
- Hartford Hospital - Institute of Living - Grant will help to facilitate online clinical support to child and adolescent patients. $10,850
- Hartford Promise - Grant will support the Scholar Emergency Fund that provides the basic human needs and educational needs of Hartford Promise scholars to allow them to continue their education. $25,000
- Hebrew Health Care - Grant will support medical equipment and increased staffing costs of Hebrew Senior Care. $20,000
- KNOX Hartford - Grant will support scholarships for Hartford residents and other operating costs to grow their own food in community gardens. $50,000
- Manchester Area Conference of Churches - Grant will support the costs of food, rent, and utility assistance for clients, as well as support lost revenue. $75,000
- MARC, Inc. of Manchester - Grant will support increased safety and staffing costs for continued care for intellectually disabled residents who are particularly at-risk for COVID-19. $100,000
- Oak Hill - Grant will support lost revenue and increased safety and staffing costs for continued care for disabled residents who are particularly at-risk for COVID-19. $150,000
- South Park Inn - Grant will support protective equipment and increased food and staffing costs to protect the safety of residents of its shelter and supportive housing facility, as well as homeless individuals temporarily housed in hotels. $75,000
Grants from the COVID-19 Response Fund are being made on a weekly basis. Hartford Foundation staff will continue to review applications and work with existing grantees to explore options to repurpose already awarded grant dollars and accelerate multi-year grant payments to address emerging needs. In addition to grant dollars, the Foundation will offer capacity building, technical support and lines of credit to nonprofit organizations in the Hartford region.
The Foundation seeded the COVID-19 Response Fund with an initial $1 million and has committed an additional $5.4 million to the Fund through the end of May. Furthermore, the Foundation has received donations of $2.56 million as well as several additional commitments from generous individuals, corporations and donor-advised-funds. Fundraising will continue throughout the public health crisis, but it is clear that the consequences of COVID-19 will continue through the end of 2020. While the Fund will not be able to address all of the needs that arise, the Foundation expects to add additional Foundation-directed dollars to the COVID-19 Response Fund going forward.
