Scott Warren – Generation Citizen
Hartford Public Library
500 Main Street, Hartford, CT
2:30 – 3:30 pm

Scott Warren's keynote, “Generation Citizen: the Power of Youth Civic Engagement,” will engage community and civic leaders, educators, students, and humanities scholars in a conversation about the importance of youth civic engagement and civics education for our democracy. Mr. Warren will address such topics as:

  • How youth civic leadership has evolved (using the examples in his book, Generation Citizen: the Power of Youth in Our Politics)
  • What youth civic leadership could look like in the context of our present day democracy and society and with a focus on racial equity
  • What kinds of leadership building and engagement opportunities and models, especially through inclusive hands-on civics, we need to create to bring about the next generation of diverse young civic leaders
  • How youth civic engagement and leadership have strengthened our democracy.

Mr. Warren will also share about his work at Generation Citizen and how it engages with schools and teachers.

According to Valeriano Ramos of Everyday Democracy, “our youth has been in the forefront of transformative social justice and political change in our country, and Mr. Warren’s  work offers new perspectives and examples of successful models of hands-on civics education that can promote civics learning and skills among youth in what is now a pivotal social context for our democracy.” He added, “the humanities offer a unique lens for understanding how recent movements led by youth can not only lead to more equitable social justice change but also to a stronger democracy. We are fortunate to have Mr. Warren as our guest speaker on this most important topic for our future generations.”

Scott Warren is the Chief Executive Officer of Generation Citizen, a national nonprofit organization based in New York City.  He co-founded Generation Citizen at Brown University with fellow student Anna Ninan during their senior year, working with students in the local Providence community. From that starting point in 2008, Scott has grown Generation Citizen to become one of the preeminent civics education organizations in the country, promoting Action Civics across diverse geographies through best-in-class programming and concrete policy change.  Scott has served as a Social Entrepreneur in Residence at Brown University and Tufts University. Scott was named an Echoing Green Fellow in 2010, and a Draper Richards Kaplan Fellow in 2012.  He continues to write on subjects ranging youth political engagement to African politics to sports, and has been published and featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, the Christian Science Monitor, Education Week, the New York Daily News, Huffington Post, San Diego Union Tribune, Sports Illustrated, Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Providence Journal. His new book, Generation Citizen: The Power of Youth in Our Politics, was published in 2019.
