Foundation Launches $3.95 Million Career Pathways Initiative Hartford Foundation for Public Giving today announced the Career Pathways Initiative, a collaborative, cross-cutting approach to providing residents with education and workforce training that will help them ascend a career ladder in industries that have job openings. The Initiative will be supported by $3.95 million over three years in grants and technical assistance. The Career Pathways Initiative targets low-literate and low-skilled residents of the Capitol Region, including single parents, at-risk youth, immigrants, homeless heads of household, former offenders, and others who need a broad range of coordinated services to be successful. The initiative enhances or expands existing programs and pilots new approaches. "The Career Pathways Initiative is a strategic approach to a serious community problem," said Linda J. Kelly, president of the Hartford Foundation. "It requires partnerships among adult literacy, community college, workforce development and employment sectors to develop realistic and attainable career pathways leading to jobs for residents facing the most formidable barriers to success." $900K Generation Work Grant Will Connect Young Adults to Employment "Generation Work" grants over the next four years to increase job opportunities for young adults from low income families in Hartford and four other communities (Cleveland, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, and Seattle). Hartford expects to receive up to $900K over the grant period for planning and implementation. The initiative will connect young adults, including those out-of-school or work or underemployed, with education, training and employment for careers in manufacturing and healthcare. |
Playbook Launched To Help Philanthropic Community Respond To Disasters The Disaster Philanthropy Playbook, a comprehensive resource of best practices and innovative approaches to guide the philanthropic community in responding to future disasters, is now available for use at www.disasterplaybook.org. "We are proud to have been a part of the creation of the Disaster Philanthropy Playbook and look forward to its use by our member organizations," said David Biemesderfer, president and CEO of the Forum. "Many of our regional associations and their member organizations have been confronted with disasters in their communities and have responded to the best of their ability and knowledge. Now, with access to the information in the Playbook, they can create proactive plans to respond when future disasters strike." Read more >> |
"Here in New Haven" Gives $1K per Day for 30 Days Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven have launched "Here in New Haven," a charitable giving initiative to support 30 local non-profit organizations dedicated to strengthening the greater New Haven community. The initiative, which coincides with Alexion's move to its new global headquarters in New Haven, will provide a $1,000 grant each day over a period of 30 business days, culminating on February 29, 2016, which is Global Rare Disease Day. "We are thrilled to partner with Alexion on this initiative, which utilizes giveGreater.org® to recognize and support the many deserving organizations serving New Haven that help our community continue to grow and thrive," said William W. Ginsberg, president and CEO of The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. Report Gives CT High Marks for Civic Health The report gives Connecticut relatively high marks compared to the national average for volunteering (29.1% vs. 26.2%) and charitable giving (57.9% vs. 50.7%) in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Residents in Connecticut are also more likely than the rest of the country to have attended a public meeting (10.5% vs. 8.7%) or worked with neighbors to fix or improve something in the community (9.2% vs. 8.2%) during those years. |
Four Foundations and State to Fund Mandated Healthcare Cost Reduction Study The state will partner with four nonprofit health foundations to fund a study that will recommend ways to reduce healthcare costs. The study will examine how other states are working to reduce the cost of care and will make recommendations that address the rising cost of care in Connecticut. Connecticut Health Foundation President and CEO Patricia Baker said, "The Connecticut Health Foundation asks state leaders to remain open to what the findings and recommendations of this study may suggest. There is much to learn from other states that could be locally adapted to the benefit of the state budget and consumers struggling to afford needed care." |

The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, has appointed Justice Flemming L. Norcott Jr. and Roxanne J. Coady to their Board of Directors. Both began seven-year terms as of January 1, taking the seats of Howard K. Hill and Shelly Saczynski, respectively, whose terms expired at the end of 2015. "Roxanne Coady has long been a great community leader - as a businesswoman, a nonprofit leader and a passionate advocate for education, literacy and reading. Nick Norcott is an unparalleled leader too, as one of the outstanding jurists of his generation," says William Ginsberg, President and CEO of The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. Retired healthcare executive Laurence A. Tanner, the former long-time President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital of Central Connecticut, has assumed the position of board chair of the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, heading a slate of Foundation leadership that includes a new vice chair and two new board members. Hospital for Special Care (HSC) President and Chief Executive Officer Lynn Ricci, a Foundation board member for the past two years, is the new Vice Chair. Oz Griebel, president and chief executive officer of the MetroHartford Alliance, has been appointed to serve on the volunteer board of directors of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The appointment was made by the MetroHartford Alliance, one of the Foundation's six outside appointing authorities. He succeeds Bonnie Malley, executive vice president and chief financial officer of The Phoenix Companies, Inc., who completed ten years on the board, the last two years as vice chair. In other board appointments, Yvette Meléndez of Glastonbury was re-elected as chair, JoAnn Price of Avon was elected vice chair and Robert B. Goldfarb of West Hartford was re-elected treasurer. Ms. Meléndez, who joined the Board in 2005, is vice president for government and community alliances for Hartford Healthcare and Hartford Hospital. Ms. Price, who joined the Board in 2010, is co-founder and managing partner of Fairview Capital Partners. Mr. Goldfarb, who joined the board in 2007, is president of HRW Resources, Inc. Following the announcement of a historic investment of up to $200 million over five years, the Nellie Mae Education Foundation (Nellie Mae) is increasing its capacity in the areas of both research and evaluation by naming two prominent experts to leadership positions within the Foundation. Nellie Mae recently named Eve Goldberg as director of research, and Sonia Caus Gleason has joined the Foundation as the director of strategic learning and evaluation. In these roles, Goldberg and Gleason will support Nellie Mae as part of its new strategy to reach a benchmark goal of 80% college and career readiness for all high school students across New England through student-centered learning. Gilberto was interviewed about her coming appointment as president and CEO of the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut when she replaces Susan B. Dunn, who will retire in March 2016. According to the Associated Press, businessman and philanthropist Ted Stanley, who made one of the largest private donations for scientific research, has died. In 2014, Stanley committed $650 million to the Broad Institute, a biomedical research center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for the study of psychiatric disorders. The cause was embraced by Stanley and his late wife, Vada Stanley, after their son was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when he was in college in 1988. Read more >> |
