NEW BRITAIN, CT -- The American Savings Foundation board of directors recently announced eighteen grants totaling $427,495 supporting a variety of New Britain area programs and services that help to improve the quality of life in the community.
“The grants given this quarter demonstrate the Foundation’s broad-based funding in the areas of education, human services and the arts,” said Maria Sanchez, director of grantmaking and community investment at American Savings Foundation. “The wide range of programs supported represent some of the ways we invest in the entire New Britain community.”
At the Foundations’ September board meeting, the board of directors approved the following grants:
$20,000 for Building Hope Together to support a city-wide effort to coordinate housing, employment, and homelessness prevention strategies and services for individuals and families in New Britain.
$7,500 to Capital Workforce Partners for the Secure Jobs project serving families in New Britain and surrounding towns. Secure Jobs is a statewide initiative led by Melville Charitable Trust designed to increase the income of families transitioning out of homelessness by connecting them to education, training, and resources that can help them get and keep higher-paying jobs.
$50,000 to the Coalition for New Britain's Youth, a citywide collaborative committed to improving the lives of New Britain’s youth, birth through age 24, and working to ensure they have what they need to be successful in school, career, and life.
$10,000 for CONCORA’s 2017-18 season of performances, including A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms, which will be performed at South Church in New Britain at 4:00 pm on Sunday, October 15.
$16,000 to the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra for their 2017-18 season of performances, including the Annual Polish Christmas Concert, which will take place at Welte Hall at Central Connecticut State University at 3:00 pm on Sunday, December 18.
$30,000 to Coram Deo to provide case management for women in recovery in a transitional residential treatment program.
$40,000 to FoodShare to support the mobile food delivery program in New Britain and surrounding towns. From January to June 2017, FoodShare delivered 172,000 pounds of food through the mobile trucks to New Britain sites.
$50,000 to Habitat for Humanity to build two single-family homes on Armistice Street in New Britain, part of an ongoing effort to invest in stable, affordable housing in the North Oak neighborhood.
$5,000 to The Main Street Children’s Choir for their 2018 season of performances.
$20,000 to Human Resources Agency (HRA) of New Britain to support the Osgood Resource Center, which provides food and other services in New Britain’s northwest region.
$20,000 to the Neighborhood Housing Services of New Britain to help the organization build its capacity to manage affordable housing projects in New Britain.
$6,500 to the New Britain Public Library Homework Center which provides one-to-one tutoring and homework help at the library during the school-year.
$37,500 to Operation Fuel for an energy assistance program for New Britain residents, primarily assisting individuals and families who do not qualify for government subsidies.
$40,000 to the ParaDYM Academy, a youth development program that focus on multimedia productions and developing career and college readiness skills.
$32,000 to the Prudence Crandall Center to support their emergency shelter and 24/7 crisis hotline for victims of domestic violence and their children.
$10,000 to Reach Out and Read for their early literacy program, which trains medical providers to give reading advice and books to parents during well-child exams in New Britain.
$5,000 to Senior Transportation Services, a program that provides transportation for seniors to medical appointments.
$27,995 to the Truancy Intervention Program, a mentoring program that matches attorney volunteers with New Britain middle school students who have high absenteeism rates.
American Savings Foundation is a permanent charitable endowment which provides grants to local nonprofit organizations, and college scholarships to area students. Since its inception in 1995 the Foundation has contributed over $53 million in total grants and scholarships in central Connecticut.
