Join us to celebrate CCP’s 50th Anniversary and 50 years of giving together. With a theme of Reimagining Philanthropy, this year’s speakers and sessions will explore the future of philanthropy with new visions for practice, leadership, and impact.

CCP's 2019 Conference is for staff and trustees of grantmaking organizations. Staff and trustees of nonprofit organizations, community leaders, and elected officials are invited to attend the Keynote Lunch.

KEYNOTE

Can Art Amend America?

Titus Kaphar, Artist, MacArthur Genuis Fellow, and Founder & President of NXTHVN

With more urgency than a headline, Titus Kaphar’s artworks capture the spirit of social justice and change in America today (exemplified in his TIME cover portrait of the Ferguson protests). Named a 2018 MacArthur Fellow for “highlighting the lack of representation of people of color in the canon of Western art with works that deconstruct the literal and visual structure of the artwork,” Kaphar’s art and talks expose racism, inequality, and a criminal justice system that is anything but just. In all his work, Kaphar speaks to the most vital discussions happening around race, diversity, and reconciliation in the U.S.

Visions for the Future of Philanthropy

As the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy celebrates its 50^th Anniversary, it’s looking toward the future. What should Connecticut funders know about the current and future social, political, and economic environment as it works toward its ambitious goals, like income security, education equity, affordable housing, community and workforce development, and racial equity? What is the role of philanthropy in important social change movements? How should their organizations operate and partner with others? This panel of national leaders will talk about their visions for the future of philanthropy, and what they see as the most important trends and strategies they think funders should consider as they plan their work for the coming years.

PHILANTHROPY AWARDS

CCP's Philanthropy Award recipients will be celebrated at CCP's Annual Conference.

Tracey and Russell Golden are co-recipients of the 2019 John H. Filer Award for their leadership in promoting private action for the public good. “Tracey and Russ Golden are an amazing couple who have played a significant role, professionally and personally, in the greater coastal Fairfield County region,” said Merle Berke-Schlessel, president and CEO of United Way of Coastal Fairfield County (UWCFC). “Through a variety of actions they have made a lasting impact on the philanthropic work of the area.” Read more >>

Juanita T. James, president and CEO of Fairfield County’s Community Foundation, is the recipient of the 2019 Martha S. Newman Award for her demonstrated, sustained, and exemplary service to the philanthropic sector in the state. “Juanita has led Fairfield County’s Community Foundation with laser-focus vision,” said Mirellise Vazquez, executive director of the Tauck Family Foundation. “Juanita also generously gives her time to counsel and mentor emerging leaders in philanthropy, including emerging leaders of color like myself. Her wisdom and advice are invaluable and the time that she gives you makes you feel valued, important, and affirmed.” Read more >>

Join this breakout session to talk more with Glenn Harris about effective strategies for engaging with government partners. David Addams will moderate a conversation with Glenn Harris and attendees to explore what different types of foundation and government partnerships can look like, share examples of exciting models, and field questions from participants.

Session B - Moving from Mission to Action: How to Operationalize this Stuff! Ari Simon, The Kresge Foundation and Janice Elliott, Melville Charitable Trust

Join this breakout session to talk more with Ari Simon about how to operationalize significant changes at a foundation. How can you address your blind spots? How can you keep your foundation relevant as the world changes around it? Janice Elliott will moderate a conversation with Ari Simon and the attendees to discuss the strategies and case studies to help foundations effect important organizational change.

Session C - Power Moves! Shifting Foundation Operations and Practices to Increase Foundation Impact. Jeanné Isler, NCRP and Laura McCargar, Perrin Family Foundation

Join this workshop to apply the Power Moves! Assessment Guide to your foundation’s work. This session will provide tools to help you determine how your organization is building, sharing, and using power and identify ways to transform your programs and operations for lasting, equitable impact.
