The Giving Fund: Help Needed for Rent, Utilities, Other Bills

DANBURY, CT -- During the holiday season, The News-Times, in partnership with the United Way of Western Connecticut, will present six cases like Hector’s every Thursday as part of The Giving Fund campaign. The stories highlighted each week will outline how a local resident or family, whose names have been changed to protect their privacy, could be helped by receiving a specific dollar amount.

A Need is Identified, and United Way Donors Answer

FAIR HAVEN, CT -- United Way of Greater New Haven learned late last week that the influx of families from Puerto Rico was straining the food delivery efforts in Fair Haven. United Way donors answered the call for help, and in just a few days, we collected $3,750—enough to provide food for 75 families.

AmeriCares, BI Program Helping Patients with Exercise, Diet

DANBURY, CT -- A program of the Boehringer Ingelheim AmeriCares Free Clinic in Danbury is helping uninsured patients better manage chronic disease through exercise and diet changes. “The Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation supports the health coach program because it closely aligns with our mission of improving patients' lives and strengthening our communities,” said Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation President Karen Iannella.

Central Connecticut State University to Offer Innovative Course in Philanthropy

NEW BRITAIN, CT -- Responding to both the State’s philanthropic needs and need for skilled philanthropy professionals, Central Connecticut State University is offering an innovative course in the practice of philanthropy. This ambitious 16-week course will begin in January and include 25 presenters from local nonprofit and philanthropic organizations. As part of the course, students will study local needs, create a case study, and write a proposal following the American Savings Foundation grant-making guidelines. At the end of the course, up to two of these projects may each be funded with a $5,000 grant from the American Savings Foundation.
